Dry Cupping
Dry cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine where specialist cups (silicon or plastic) are placed on the skin for a few minutes. This creates a vacuum effect which decompresses the tight layers of muscle and fascia (connective tissue). Whilst the cups are on the skin, passive movement is carried out in order to encourage the tissues to glide underneath the cups thus creating more space in between the tight tissues.
Cupping therapy is used on many athletes and was made popular during the 2016 Olympics where the swimmer Michael Phelps was seen sporting the circular red marks left from cupping.

Benefits of dry cupping
- Decompresses tight, tense muscles
- Helps to improve local blood flow
- Stretches the underlying tissues
- Can help to increase range of motion
- Can help to reduce muscular tension
The marks that you see on skin is where stagnation has occurred. Meaning that there has been poor blood flow to the muscles. These marks can take up to 5-10 days to fade depending on each individual. The marks are not bruises as no tissue damage has occurred.
IASTM
Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) or Graston, is a popular treatment for myofascial restriction. IASTM uses specially designed, stainless steel instruments to provide a mobilising effect to scar tissue and myofascial adhesions. The technique is said to have evolved from Gua sha which is a method used in Chinese medicine. However, Gua sha has a different application method from IASTM which has a far more gentle approach. IASTM targets the fascia, aka connective tissue which covers, surrounds and connects muscles. The fascial network has 6-10 times more pain receptors than it’s muscular counterpart.
One of the unique features of IASTM is it’s ability to influence the nervous system which in-turn can help to create changes to pain.
(IASTM is included within the price of the treatment).
